- In many cases, a Critical CareNurse might see a patient before a physician does, so they must beprepared to assess a patient's condition and begintreatment. This would include taking vital signs, treating anddressing wounds, setting up IVs and administering medication. Theywould monitor a patient's progress and report any changesto the physician.
- Since many illnesses or injuriestypically require some sort of diagnostic testing, it is often upto the Critical Care Nurse to send orders for these procedures,which can include x-rays, CT scans or EKGs. A Critical Care Nursecan go over test results with physicians in order to come up witheffective treatment plans.
- A Critical Care Nurse canexplain patient conditions to patients themselves and familymembers. They can review care plans that patients can continue oncethey have been discharged from the hospital or clinic. These planscould include dietary restrictions, physical therapy exercises,medications or other lifestyle changes.
- A Critical CareNurse should be knowledgeable about and aware of any regulatorylaws concerning health care, such as patient privacy and personalhealth information laws. They should also know and work under thepolicies of the specific medical facility in which they areemployed. Finally, they should adhere to clinical and ethicalstandards of their profession
