• The Senior Consultant is the mostsenior doctor (apart from the Department Chair and/or Section Head)who practices in a specific specialty and has oversightresponsibility for his team of Consultants and junior doctors andmanages other team members.
• The SeniorConsultant is responsible for the care of all patients admittedunder his name and for all the clinical decisions made by otherdoctors under his supervision.
• In addition toproviding high quality patient care (diagnose, treat, manage andadmit patients under his name) as delineated by his clinicalprivileges, the Senior Consultant works closely with departmentchair and/or section head on management issues (such as servicedevelopment, funding, budgets, and staffing), on the teaching andtraining of junior doctors, and on academic and researchpriorities.
• In essence, the Senior Consultantis required to have professional clinical competence, leadershipand management skills. Research is a key and integral component tothe Corporation's Strategic aim to become an AcademicHealth System.
